Redistributing The Wealth

Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:00

Republicans high and low have been heard to make light of a phrase that has been attributed to Obama during the election campaign:

"Redistributing the wealth".

Yep, I heard him say it on the campaign trail. Did you? And there are a lot of people screaming out about socialism. And how "redistributing the wealth" is the virtual end of our democratic world. Oh my, I am sure McCarthyism must be right around the corner.

Why is everyone so up-in-arms over this? Hell, President Bush wanted to make changes to the Constitution on a neo-conservative whim and nobody flinched.

It would appear to me that as long as we have varying tax brackets based on income, we are in fact already "redistributing the wealth". Those who currently make more, pay more - as a percentage of their income. Of course, those who make more are probably able to pay someone (i.e. a financial advisor) to make sure that they don't really pay more.

But in the end, the wealth is shifted based on income. Today. Yesterday. And tomorrow. Oh, by the way, you've been living it on a day-to-day basis.

So please don't use this as a way to take issue with Obama's plan. It's a moot point.

Now if you want to discuss the pros and cons of simplifying the taxation plan, then let's start a discussion. How about a flat tax rate - one rate for all? Why would the powers-that-be not support it?

Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

So when you hear the phrase "redistribute the wealth" from our President-Elect, follow that up with "been there, done that"!

And get back to more important things.
