During the American Revolution in 1776, Thomas Paine published the pamphlet "Common Sense". In this, he noted the following:
"Perhaps the sentiments contained in the following pages, are not YET sufficiently fashionable to procure them general favour; a long habit of not thinking a thing WRONG, gives it a superficial appearance of being RIGHT, and raises at first a formidable outcry in defense of custom. But the tumult soon subsides. Time makes more converts than reason."
This phenomenon - of simply accepting 'what is' due to custom or tradition, as opposed to what is right - has inundated our culture in many ways. Issues have become more about "accepted standards" than about "evidence-based standards". The culture of health as we know it - is in need of change. Our system of "health" has produced children with the highest rates of obesity and chronic conditions in the past century, and our system of "health care" is buried in over-utilization, under-accessibility, and a cost that is pushing upwards of 17% of our GDP.
It's time for a change, a change that strikes at the root of the issues. It's time for people to become educated, to gain awareness of the issues at hand, to learn, reflect, and act upon the evidence. It's time to Live A Smart Life.
The Smart Health Revolution is here.
