Yes, I would call it a fiasco.
And a nuisance.
And a strange twist of professional football history.
Brett Favre - the quarterback who had forged himself into the Green Bay Packers' history books. A man that could have retired as one of the legendary Packers, perhaps the greatest football team in the modern era. A quarterback that could have bowed-out gracefully after his 17th professional season.
But no, the ego won out.
There is a difference between "can he play" and "is it time for him not to play". Does he have more great seasons in him behind the New York Jets' offensive line, throwing to receivers that he doesn't have much playing time with? Will he still be a first ballot Hall of Famer? Will history still look back fondly? Or will he be remembered for his leaving the Packers, instead of what he accomplished with them?
And imagine this - he was going to be paid millions of dollars by the Packers to NOT play - thereby protecting his legacy as a Packer great.
An interesting aside ... Favre was almost a Jet on draft day. Check out this link to see something that I would call "strangely ironic" ...
So if you can get past Favre swapping allegiances after his nasty divorce with the Packers, then stop for a moment and consider the message that was sent to Aaron Rodgers. "Yes, you are the incumbent starting quarterback" he was told ... in the same breath as "We're going to welcome Favre back to training camp in any way, shape or form - even as a back-up". You know for certain that the fans would call for Favre to be the starter, and once again Rodgers would have faced the negativity of public opinion. Let's hope he has a stellar season, because if not, Wisconsin may be the last place that he wants to be.
