While college football was playing itself out for yet another weekend, I was crewing an endurance run in rural Alabama - the Talladega National Forest, to be exact. More on that later ...
But from what I've read, I didn't miss much.
Technological advances in cellular coverage gave me the ability to check in on the games. Yes, I know, crazy as it sounds, I was checking in on games with a big national impact.
Guess what? A lot of non-surprises took place while I was gone.
Penn State - wasn't as good as everyone thought they were. A loss to Iowa and a grand slide down the BCS scale. Another Big 10 team that really isn't much to talk about ... for another year. None of this surprised me. Just remember that they beat Ohio State by a score of 13 - 6? Wooo boy, that's the best the conference can give us?
Texas - still didn't have much defense, at least in the first half. The statistics I read didn't really display a performance worthy of a top 5 team. Has anyone checked their national ranking for defense? And is it any better than last year? Last thing I heard, the answer was "not much". What are you doing, Will? It was Baylor!
Texas Tech - wow, now that was a smashing of Oklahoma State. Maybe they really are the real deal. They discovered how to play defense this year, and they actually give the ball to the running back on offense. Tech is looking strong. It should be a real barnburner against Oklahoma in 2 weeks ... just remember, the game is in Norman ...
And while I was in Alabama, let's talk about the Crimson Tide. Saban gets a squeaker at LSU. I don't know about you, but I think they are about to get a rude awakening ... with the name of the University of Florida. The key of the BCS is to lose at the right time ... and I think Florida did exactly that! If 'Bama doesn't lose to Auburn (to save Tubberville's existence there), then they can kiss it all goodbye in the SEC championship. Of course, I didn't profess this in public when I was in Tide country in the center of Alabama ... for my own safety.
Every game means something now ... and it's all getting close to conference championship time. That is, of course, if your conference HAS a championship (Big 10 and PAC 10, can you say "give us a conference champ, please?").
